Dough: 1. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees

  • 1/2 cup whole milk , heated to 100 degrees
  • 3 teaspoons instant or rapid-rise yeast

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter , cut into 6 pieces and softened
  • For the topping:
  • 3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon light corn syrup
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt(omit if using salted butter)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs, or steak
  • 2-3 bell peppers, stem and membranes removed and peppers quartered
