  • Pastry Top:
  • 5 cups blackberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 T sifted flour
  • butter or margarine
  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t cream of tartar
  • 2 T sugar
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup milk

Step 1

Toss blackberries with sugar. Pour into well-buttered 1 1/2 -qt oblong baking dish. Sprinkle sifted flour over berries; dot with butter. Set aside. Put flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, sugar, and salt in bowl. With a fork stir in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. With fork stir in milk. Form mixutre into a ball. Roll dough 1/4" thick on a floured board. Cover blackberries with dough; trim edges. Cut to vent in the center of dough and sprinkle top generously with sugar. Back cobbler at 400 degrees for 40 min or until crust is golden. Serve warm with ice cream or plain.
