Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup beer or nonalcoholic beer
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups finely crushed plain potato chips
  • 2 (6-8 ounce) cod fillets, about 1 1/4 inches thick, cut lengthwise in half
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 green leaf or Bibb lettuce leaves
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 4 tablespoons tartar sauce
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped

Step 1

Whisk together the flour, beer and egg in a large bowl. Place the crushed chips on a sheet of wax paper. Dip the fillets into the batter, then into the chips, pressing to adhere.


Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the fillets and cook until the fish is until golden brown and cooked through, 6-8 minutes.


Layer 1 lettuce leaf and 1 fish fillet in each hot dog bun. Top each evenly with the tartar sauce, tomato and onion.

Tip: If you prefer to bake the fish, place the coated fillets on a foil-lined baking sheet and lightly spray with nonstick spray. Bake at 400 degrees F without turning until browned and cooked through, 12-15 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish.
