This is a recipe handed down from generations through my family. Good 'ol fashioned Southern cornbread.

Ingredients

  • 2 heaping tbl Crisco lard
  • 3 c corn meal
  • Buttermilk for consistency
  • 1 egg

Preparation

Step 1

Melt 2 heaping tbl Crisco lard in large iron skillet in oven preheated to 400°

In glass bowl mix: 3c cornmeal, 1 egg, and buttermilk until mixture is consistency of cake batter. Swirl melted Crisco in skillet to coat sides for easy turn out, then pour melted lard into mixture. Mix well. Pour back into skillet and bake until golden brown on top or until toothpick comes out clean. Usually about 30 min.
