Split Pea and Ham Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 lb dry green split peas
  • 1 ham steak, chopped into 1/2" cubes
  • 12 C cold water
  • 1/4 C chopped onion
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 1 carrot, chopped
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 1/4 t pepper

Preparation

Step 1

Wash peas in large sieve under cold water. Turn into large soup pot with lid and add the cold water. Cover and let stand in a cool place overnight

Three hours before mealtime, add all of the remaining ingredients and simmer, covered, for 3 hours, stirring frequently.

Serve with crusty bread.
