Ingredients

  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 yeast cakes
  • 1 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 cup soft shortening
  • 7 cups flour

Preparation

Step 1

Put water in bowl. Dissolve sugar. Sprinkle yeast over and let stand 10 min. Add rest of ingredients and half the flour. Add remaining flour to make soft but not sticky dough. Mix by hand until well blended. Turn out on floured board and knead until small bubbles appear under the surface. Rise for 1 1/2 hours. Punch down and rise again for 45 minutes. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut 3 inch cookies. Heat hot oil in deep fryer 300 degrees or large pot. Cook until brown on both sides and slit hole and add raspberry jam. Sprinkle in sugar.
