Ingredients
- 3 lbs. Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced thin
- 3/4 cup water
- 11/2 cups sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons corn starch
Preparation
Step 1
Put 3/4 cup water, sugar and cinnamon in large pot. Add peeled apples and cook slow for 10-15 minutes. Add 2 corn starch and cook 5-10 minutes more. Add more water if needed.
Mix flour, salt and shortening until blended. Add egg, vinegar and 1/3 cup water. Mix and knead well with hands until a dough ball forms. Break dough in 1/2 and roll out each half for top and bottom crust. Lay bottom crust in 11x16 pan. Add cooked apples and place top crust on top. Poke a few vent holes in top crust with a fork.
Cook 20 minutes at 450, then 30 minutes at 350.
Let cool and frost with thin icing.
