Ingredients

  • 8 servings
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • Vegetable oil
  • 4 medium onions
  • Creamy Chili Sauce (reipe follows)

Preparation

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine eggs and milk.

In a shallow dish, combine flour, cornmeal, seasoned salt, pepper, and red pepper.

In a large Dutch oven or fryer, pour oil to a depth of 3 inches; heat to 360 degrees.

Cut onions in half lengthwise; cut each half into thin slices. Dip onion straws in egg mixture, allowing excess to drain; coat in flour mixture. Fry, in batches, for about 4 minutes, or until golden. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with Creamy Chili Sauce.

CREAMY CHILI SAUCE MAKES ABOUT 1 1/4 CUPS:

1 cup mayonnaise
3 ablespoons Thai sweet chili sauce
1 tablespoon garlic-chili sauce
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, garlic-chili sauce, and red pepper, stirring well. Cover, and chill.
