Preparation
Step 1
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease an 8x12 inch baking pan and line with waxed paper, allowing paper to hang over the two long sides.
2. Place the dates in a saucepan with 3/4 cup of water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes--make sure the water doesn't evaporate completely. Add the baking soda and allow to cool.
3. Place 3/4 cup of the butter, the flour, vanilla, baking powder, eggs, and 1/3 cup of milk in a food processor. Mix in short bursts for 1 minute or until well blended. Add the dates and pulse to blend. Do not overprocess.
4. Place the mixture in the baking pan and bake for 20 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Set aside to cool.
5. Place the remaining butter and milk and the brown sugar in a saucepan and heat gently to dissolve the sugar. Add the confectioners' sugar and mix well. Spread over the top when cool and sprinkle with the walnuts
