Grandma's Hamburger Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper (optional)
  • 1 stalks celery, chopped
  • 4 cups tomato juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cans cream of celery soup
  • 21/2 cups peeled, grated carrots
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground marjoram
  • 6 slices swiss cheese

Preparation

Step 1

1. In large sauce pan or Dutch Oven, brown hamburger, onion, celery and green pepper. Drain off fat and return to pan.

2. Add tomato juice, water, and soup. Stir with a wire whisk to blend.

3. Stir in carrots, sugar, garlic salt, pepper and marjoram. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes over low heat.

4. Place 1 slice of swiss cheese in the bottom of each bowl. Add soup.
