  • 1 package German chocolate
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 egg yolks, beaten
  • 4 egg whites, beaten
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • -
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Melt chocolate in boiling water, add vanilla and salt. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolks. Add 3/4 cup buttermilk alternately with flour. Dissolve soda in remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk and add. Stir in chocolate mixture. Fold in egg whites. Bake in 3 9-inch pans for 30 to 40 minutes at 350deg.

FILLING:
Beat eggs and set aside. Mix flour, sugar and salt. Stir into cream, add butter, cook till butter is melted over slow heat. Pour small amount over eggs, beat, then add to mixture. Add pecans and coconut. Cook till thick stirring constantly. Add vanilla, spread between layers.
