Preparation

Step 1

Directions

1. Butter a 3-quart rectangular baking dish; set aside.

2. On a large baking sheet arrange bread slices; cover loosely and let stand overnight. (Or preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Bake bread slices, uncovered, for 5 minutes.)

3. In a large shallow dish whisk together the eggs, milk, the 1/3 cup granulated sugar, the cream, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until sugar is dissolved.

4. Dip each bread slice into egg mixture, turning to coat. Arrange in the prepared dish. Cover; chill for 2 to 24 hours.

5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon granulated sugar over the bread slices. Bake, uncovered, about 35 minutes or until bread is golden and puffed. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with Spiced Maple Syrup.

Directions

1. In a small saucepan combine maple syrup, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to boiling; remove from the heat. Let stand for 20 minutes. With a slotted spoon remove cinnamon and cloves. Makes about 1/2 cup.
