Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2-1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
  • Topping
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint stick candy (candy canes)
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Cream sugar and butter. Mix in egg and flavorings. Measure flour by sifting. Blend in salt. Gradually add flour mixture; mix well.
Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half.
Heat oven to 375.
On lightly floured surface, roll 1 tsp. color dough into strip about 4” long and repeat with 1 tsp. white dough. Place two strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope . Curve top for handle of cane.
Put on ungreased baking sheet. Bake for about 9 minutes or until lightly browned. While stir warm, sprinkle with mixture of 1/2 cup crushed peppermint stick candy (candy canes) and 1/2 cup sugar.

Tip: Make one cookie at a time.
