This is an old receipt that my German Grandmother passed to my mother and then to me. German cake at it's best.

Ingredients

  • 1 4 oz package of dark German chocolate bars
  • 1/2 Cup of hot water
  • Melt the chocolate in the hot water and set aside to cool.
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 1 cup Shortening
  • 4 egg Yolks
  • 4 egg Whites - beaten stiff
  • 2 1/2 Cups Flour
  • 1 Tsp. Soda
  • 1 Tsp. Vanilla
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

Cream sugar & shortening, add the egg yolks.

Add 3/4 cup og the buttermilk and mix well.

Add salt and soda to the flour and alternate with the buttermilk.

then mix in the Choc. mixture.

add vanilla.

Whip the egg white until stiff and fold into the cake mixture carefully.m


bake 35 to 40 minutes @ 350 degrees.
