Ingredients

  • 5 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tesapoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups molasses
  • 2 eggs, beaten

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat over to 325 degrees. Thoroughly mix flour, baking soda, salt and spices. Melt shortening in a large sauce pan. Cool slightly. Add sugar and molasses and eggs: mix well. Add 4 cups dry ingredients and mix well.

Turn mixture onto lightly floured surface. Knead remaining dry mixture into the dough. Add a little more flour, if needed, to make a firm dough. Divide dough into 2 equal parts. Spray pan with vegetable pan spray. Press dough portion into preparted pan. Bake 23-25 minutes. Cool in pan on rack for 5 minutes. Turn pan over to release and cool completely.
