Hamburger Steaks with Onions

By

Pan-grilled seasoned ground beef patties and onions in a yummy brown gravy for potatoes. This popular diner dish is Southern comfort food at its best!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 medium onion, cut into thin slices then separated into rings
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons oil, if needed
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups beef broth

Preparation

Step 1

In a mixing bowl, mix together the meat, black pepper, and garlic salt. Divide mixture into 6 even-sized balls of meat then flatten into patties about 1/2-inch thick.

In a large skillet, cook patties over medium/medium-high heat until done, 4-5 minutes per side. Remove patties from skillet; keep warm.

Reduce heat to medium; add the onions to the skillet and a teaspoon of oil if needed to saute. Sprinkle lightly with a little salt and pepper. Saute onions until lightly browned and tender, but not mushy. Remove onions from skillet; keep warm.

Add flour to skillet and a teaspoon of oil if needed to blend. Whisk and cook for 1 minute. Add the Worcestershire sauce and about 1 cup of the broth, whisking vigorously to blend until smooth. (You may need to remove it from heat to do this.) Add remaining broth and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced by half and thickened, whisking frequently.

Return steaks to the skillet; spoon the gravy over the meat. Scatter the onions on top of the steaks. Heat until warmed through. Remove to a serving dish and serve immediately with mashed potatoes or other potato of choice.
