Easy Baked Macaroni and Cheese
By msippigrl
This Southern classic side dish is half the fuss of other homemade Mac and Cheese recipes. There's no roux in this one.. just cook the macaroni, layer it with the other ingredients, and bake. I was surprised how good it was!
Ingredients
- 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper, white or black
- 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
- 3 tablespoons cold margarine, cut into very thin slices
- 2 - 3 cups shredded Sharp cheddar cheese, as desired
- 3/4 cup milk
Preparation
Step 1
Cook pasta al dente tender; drain well. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 2-qt. baking dish with cooking spray.
Mix the flour, salt, pepper, and dry mustard together in a small bowl; set aside.
Place half of the cooked macaroni in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half the flour mixture over the top of the macaroni, then top with half of the margarine slices. Cover with 1 cup of cheese. Repeat the layers (macaroni, flour, margarine, and cheese). Pour the milk evenly over the top of all.
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil, return to oven and bake an additional 5-10 minutes. (If desired, you can top with additional cheese before returning it to the oven.)
