Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Using a pastry blender, a sharp knife, or your fingertips work the cubed butter into the flour mixture until it resembles pea-sized crumbs.

Add milk and stir gently with a fork until a sticky dough forms.

Turn out onto a floured work surface. Flour your hands and shape dough into a ball. Gently knead it about 8 times.

Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a rectangle about 13x11 inches, sprinkling with more flour as needed to prevent sticking.

Spread the softened butter over the top of the dough. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar. Top with the chopped chocolate.

With a long side facing you, gently roll the dough up jelly-roll style, ending with seam on bottom. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 10 - 12 even slices. Place the slices on the paper-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 16-18 minutes or until biscuits are lightly browned.

Serve warm, with butter if desired.
