Savory Breakfast Polenta

Check the directions on your particular box of polenta, as the coarseness, ratios and cooking times may vary
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup yellow polenta
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 slices bacon, cooked crisp
- 1/4 cup diced onions
- 1 small garlic clove, finely diced
- 3 tablespoons grated cheese
- 2 to 4 large egg, fried, depending on how many people you want to feed
Blueberry slump

- 1 3/4 cups sugar, plus more for sprinkling
- 4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. kosher salt

- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened, plus more for pan
- 1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder, plus more for dusting
- 1/2 cup unsulfured molasses
- 3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons finely grated peeled fresh ginger
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Almond Cake

- 2 sticks (8 oz.) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup sour cream, at room temperature
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 (7-ounce) tube almond paste, cut into small pieces
- 4 egg yolks, at room temperature
- 1 tsp. pure almond extract
Chocolate Bourbon Cake

Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a large (10 cup capacity), or two 8- or 9-inch loaf pans
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened, more for greasing pan
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, more for dusting pan
- 5 ounces high quality, unsweetened dark chocolate
- 1/4 cup instant espresso (can use instant coffee)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup bourbon whiskey (can use 1/2 cup), more for sprinkling
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup confectioners sugar (powdered sugar), for sprinkling
Strawberry and Cream Pops

Puree the strawberries in a food processor
- Just over 1 pound strawberries, hulled
- 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons simple syrup (make that and a bit more by combining 2/3 cup water and 2/3 cup sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is transparent)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Optional: 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Red Lentil Soup with Lemon

- 4 Tbsp. olive oil, plus additional good oil for drizzling
- 2 large yellow onions, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
- 2 Tbsp. tomato paste
- 2 tsp. ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt, or more to taste
- A few grinds of freshly ground black pepper
- Pinch of cayenne or Aleppo pepper, or more to taste
- 2 quarts chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 cups red lentils, picked through for stones and debris
- 2 large carrots, peeled and diced
- Juice of 1 lemon, or more to taste
- 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Granola Bars Alton Brown

Butter a 9 by 9-inch glass baking dish and set aside
- 8 ounces old-fashioned rolled oats, approximately 2 cups
- 1 1/2 ounces raw sunflower seeds, approximately 1/2 cup
- 3 ounces sliced almonds, approximately 1 cup
- 1 1/2 ounces wheat germ, approximately 1/2 cup
- 6 ounces honey, approximately 1/2 cup
- 1 3/4 ounces dark brown sugar, approximately 1/4 cup packed
- 1-ounce unsalted butter, plus extra for pan
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 6 1/2 ounces chopped dried fruit, any combination of apricots, cherries or blueberries
Creamy Apple Squash Soup

Heat the oil in pressure cooker and add leeks
- 1 Tablespoon oil
- 1 1/2 cups sliced leeks (white and light green parts) or chopped onions
- 4 cups water
- 3 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded and chopped
- 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and quartered (I used Cameo apples – Granny Smith would make the soup less sweet)
- 1/3 cup uncooked old-fashioned oatmeal (not the quick cook kind)
- 2 Tablespoons minced fresh ginger
- 1 Tablespoon mild curry powder
- 1 teaspoon salt

In a small saucepan, combine juice concentrate and sugar over medium-low
- 1 cup thawed orange juice concentrate
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 cups full-fat plain yogurt
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
