Preparation
Step 1
Wrap the onions individually in pieces of aluminum foil. I added no butter or seasonings of any kind (I guess I'm a purist when it comes to onions), but you could if you wanted to. Place the onions in the bottom of a 4 - 6 quart crock pot making sure that none are touching. Now balance the seasoned steaks, folded in half, on top of the onions. I put one folded steak onto two onions. Place the lid on and cook on high for 4 1/2 - 5 hours or on low for 8 - 9 hours.
Once the steaks are done they will they are a beautiful golden brown color. The onions should feel soft through the foil. This will indicate they are done as well.
Remove the steaks and place them on plates to be resting. You'll also want to remove the onions and place them in a bowl. When you start unwrapping them there will be lots of liquid ('cause I'm told onions are mostly water) and the bowl will catch it.
Unfold the steaks and cut in half (I just cut where the fold was) and serve with onions and choice of side. These were very moist, not dried out at all. I will definitely be doing this affordable dinner again!
