How do I format text on the site?

Key Ingredient uses a language called Textile to format text. It is really simple.

To make something bold just surround it with '*', like: *this will be bold*

To make a list just start each item in the list with '*' on it’s own line, like:

* item 1
* item 2
* item 3

If you would like to make a link try:

"Key Ingredient Rocks":http://keyingredient.com
Which will become: Key Ingredient Rocks.

To add a link to another recipe we have a special format: @RecipeID
RecipeID is the number you see in the location bar when you view a recipe. For instance: http://keyingredient.com/recipes/5059/carrot-soup…
The RecipeID is 5059. So to add a link to that recipe in either a comment, an ingredient, or in a group, type in @5059 and you would see: Carrot Soup With Sesame Seeds And Chives.

How do I modify a recipe I like?

If you like a recipe but want to give it your own special touch, just press the “Clone” button while looking at the recipe. This will create a copy of the recipe that preserves a link to the recipe it was “based on.” That way the other cooks who like the same recipe will be able to see all the creative variations you come up with.

Note: not all recipes can be cloned. If the author sets a recipe to “Locked” you will not have access to the cloning feature.

How do I collect recipes?

You can collect recipes in four ways:

  • By adding new recipes through the new recipe wizard.
  • By importing recipes from the internet.
  • By adding recipes from other cooks to your cookbooks (you can create new cookbooks on the collect page by pressing the ”+” button).
  • By basing a new recipe off of an existing recipe by using the “Clone” button.

The clone button is available on recipes who’s authors have set their control to “open.” When you clone a recipe you can still see where that recipe comes from by viewing the “About” tab.

How do I import recipes from my blog?

To import recipes from a blog, we recommend using the Key Ingredient import bookmarklet (*). Once you place the bookmarklet on your browser’s toolbar you can simply highlight the recipe on your blog and press the “Post to Key Ingredient” button on your toolbar. That will bring the recipe text into Key Ingredient’s importer where you can copy-and-paste it into the correct fields.

* What is a bookmarklet? A bookmarklet is a small piece of code that works like an intelligent bookmark. When you press it, the bookmarklet copies the text you have highlighted and imports it into Key Ingredient.
